If your eyes constantly feel dry, irritated, watery, or like there's something stuck in them, you may be dealing with dry eye disease. While many people assume dry eye means they simply aren't producing enough tears, that's often not the case.
One of the most common causes of dry eye is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands, located along your eyelids, produce the protective oil layer that coats your tears. This oil helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly and keeps the surface of your eyes comfortable and healthy.
When these glands become blocked, your tears lose that protective oil layer and evaporate much faster than they should. As a result, you may experience symptoms such as burning, stinging, blurry vision, redness, excessive tearing, light sensitivity, or the feeling that something is in your eye.
While artificial tears, warm compresses, and nutritional supplements can help manage symptoms for some people, they don't always address the underlying cause of dry eye. If blocked meibomian glands are causing your symptoms, LipiFlow® may be an effective treatment option.
LipiFlow is an FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment designed to open blocked meibomian glands and restore their natural function. During the procedure, a small device is placed over your eye that gently applies controlled heat to the inside of the eyelids while delivering a precise massage to the outside of the lids. This combination helps melt and clear away hardened oils that are blocking the glands.
The treatment is performed right in our office and takes about 12 minutes per eye. Most patients find the procedure comfortable and are able to return to their normal activities immediately afterward. As the glands begin functioning more normally, the tear film becomes healthier, helping reduce dry eye symptoms over time
Rather than simply providing temporary relief, LipiFlow treats one of the most common underlying causes of evaporative dry eye, helping many patients experience longer-lasting comfort and improved vision.
